We are currently recruiting for an experienced Surgical First Assistant to join a leading private hospital in Kent, working as part of a highly skilled Operating Theatre and Perioperative Care team.
This is an excellent opportunity for a qualified Surgical First Assistant (SFA), Surgical First Assistant Practitioner, Theatre Practitioner, Registered Nurse or Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) with appropriate surgical first assisting experience, looking for a permanent position within a professional and supportive private hospital environment.
The role offers full-time and part-time hours, with a variety of evening, night and weekend shifts available. Enhanced rates for unsocial hours provide an excellent opportunity to increase your annual earnings, with enhanced earnings of up to £52,000 – £64,000 per annum.
As a Surgical First Assistant, you will:
- Provide high-quality clinical support throughout the surgical and perioperative pathway
- Work closely with Consultant Surgeons, Surgical First Assistants, Anaesthetists, ODPs, Theatre Nurses and the wider multidisciplinary theatre team
- Act as a skilled first assistant to the surgeon during surgical procedures
- Assist with patient positioning, preparation and draping in accordance with surgical requirements
- Provide appropriate assistance with surgical exposure, haemostasis, tissue handling and closure, within your scope of practice
- Anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team throughout procedures
- Maintain a safe, effective and fully prepared operating theatre environment
- Ensure appropriate surgical instruments, equipment and specialist equipment are available and ready for procedures
- Maintain strict standards of infection prevention and control and surgical safety
- Participate in relevant WHO Surgical Safety Checklist processes
- Monitor and maintain patient safety throughout the perioperative journey
- Work collaboratively with the wider Operating Theatre and Multidisciplinary Team
- Complete accurate clinical documentation and patient records
- Maintain professional standards and comply with hospital policies, procedures and clinical governance requirements
- Support the wider theatre team across scrub, circulating and recovery functions, where appropriate to your training and experience
We are looking for an experienced Surgical First Assistant who is confident working within an Operating Theatre and surgical environment and is committed to delivering excellent standards of patient care.
You will ideally have:
- A recognised Surgical First Assistant qualification
- Appropriate professional registration, such as NMC or HCPC registration
- Previous experience working as a Surgical First Assistant, SFA, Theatre Practitioner, ODP or Theatre Nurse
- Demonstrable experience providing first assistant support during surgical procedures
- Strong knowledge of perioperative care, surgical procedures and theatre practice
- Excellent knowledge of infection prevention, surgical safety and patient care
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- The ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and surgical team
- A professional, calm and patient-focused approach
- The ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary Operating Theatre team
- Flexibility to work evening, night and weekend shifts
